Social Media Rethinking

Posted by WhiteFelineWonder - 2 hours ago

Hello, been a while since the last entry.

This one's just mainly gonna be little ramblings that's a concoction of my lack of confidence in the world, my feelings as I work on my own site, and some other things that's been in mind as time just goes by. It might not make some sense and there's some things that I know I don't have a reason no matter how hard i try to think about it, but it is what it is. TL;DR, this is just a lot of feelings I've been having lately.

Part 1: the part that's relevant to the title.

I've been working on my website for a good while now. I overhauled the creations tab and it utilizes iframes now, I have plans for a third shrine, I added a new part that parodies Roblox, even added a custom widget to the home page that shows my latest little blurb from Status Cafe! I've been doing a lot with my website, and I'm proud of it! Though, as much as I love making my website as cozy as it can be with its velvet aesthetic with mustard/dandelion yellow highlights, I've also been taking note of the decline of the United States, and my overall feelings on certain sites, such as Bluesky. Though, nobody really likes talking about politics because nobody really wins in the world of politics so to make a long story short, I've lost a lot of trust and faith the more this place just gets corrupted. It's already made its way into a dream of mine before. I can only dream of being in Canada instead of the Decrepit States....

As for the Bluesky part, I'm not really feeling as much when it comes to using Bluesky compared to what, two years ago or something? While I'm glad that Bluesky is not the burning dumpster fire that is.... that, I don't really see much of a point in me using Bluesky, even if it's to keep up to date with friends and seeing what's new with emulation handhelds and other stuff.

If I can be upfront and honest, Bluesky doesn't really seem to have clear skies for me. Now I know you can just make yourself go cold on there and not exactly leave the site entirely, but 1) as of the 19th they still haven't really implemented a sort of "private" account feature like the poisoned bird did before it was acquired by some tech loon, and 2) I'm indecisive and can't make up my mind sometimes.

On the note of my own website, I've been eyeing and silently debating about this place called Melonland, since I've spent so much time making my own website lately. It's one of those forum places but it's also tied to this whole indie/personal/whatever-you-wanna-call-it web and it looks really fun, as it even has stuff like a classic Minecraft server, Tamogatchi thingy you can embed, webring, and plenty of other things there. I'm still unsure of joining it right away since there's a lot I want to explore. I've been more fond of stuff like Melonland and Newgrounds that aims to bring back the wacky, personal, and fun that the early web had lately, as the days go by and as we're witnessing history practically repeat itself, and not for the better. And maybe have something other than Discord so that I don't have to put all these eggs in one basket since I've been so fed up with Discord lately, it's like a toxic relationship that's difficult to disband.

Actually that segue's to the next part I wanted to talk about: Discord.

I use it, but I don't use vanilla Discord because DEAR GOD I'VE BEEN HATING DISCORD LATELY. UI changes, suddenly one free week of Nitro, stuff that's in your face that you just don't want in your face, like- look Discord.

I don't care how many times you make Nitro look like it's the best bar party of your life, I don't want Nitro. It sounds crazy but I don't want Discord to pester me about Nitro every five minutes just because some random file I want to upload for fun is a single megabyte larger than the limit, & I just wanna chat with my friends. I've had to not only look for some custom theme(s) to hide all the microtransaction nonsense but also apply a custom theme from how ugly the Discord layout is. Like why is there suddenly a thin bar at the top of the client that just shows the name of the server it's so fucking useless-

Fortunately, I am on Revolt. More customizable than Discord and no Nitro to be shoved in your face. You can just use it like you would normally use Discord, but some features that are normally behind Nitro are free with Revolt, like custom banners and custom themes.

So what's all the reasons behind all this? Well, why I don't have all the reasons, the most I can say is that this world is boring, and I want to life the old early web life instead of letting some algorithm dictate what I should see. I'm tired of trying to chase some numbers, those don't even bring any satisfaction anymore since I've been so desensitized to them that it's become white noise. And I personally feel that with the way technology is going, I don't think I like where things are going anymore.

TL;DR, i feel the personal/indie web is so much better than all these mainstream sites that you typically see, and fuck you discord

I'll still be here on Newgrounds and Bitview and other sites, don't worry, it's just that my "social media" priorities have changed thanks to how more developed my own website feels. Sorry if there's some potholes with this post, I wanted to get this out there but it's like 11 PM where I'm at. To quote a video, the modern web has lost its soul. Even if this may not make much sense in the thinking department on my end I just wanna thank you for at least reading this.

It's hard to be optimistic when the land you're living in is slowly tearing itself apart for the worse.
